How to choose a frame?

A good framework can add a lot to a work of art – a bad one can take away from the impression: it is essential that we are able to choose the right one. In our article, we have collected the essential fundamentals, so with this knowledge, you can easily navigate through the vast selection of picture frames.

1. Take the picture with you!

First and foremost, always choose a frame for the image and do not rely on your memory! If we think that our photographic memory certainly will not let us down in terms of colors and shapes, think about the dimensions: even though we measured it, only a few millimeters of deviation are enough for the picture to fall out of the frame, or it may be small, so in any case we should trust a specialist with the measurements.

In addition, in most workshops, you can try the sample frames out on your picture so you can see how the selected piece would look like. It is worth taking advantage of this, because only this way can we be sure, that it really is the right frame, which will bring the artwork to life.

2. Think of the picture, not ourselves!

As we have said, we can choose from a wide variety of types, shapes and materials, and it is easy to fall in love with one or two pieces, that are more intricate. But there is no point in choosing a really decorative frame, if it does not fit our photographs or paintings. Try not to look at only the part, but the whole, and do it all: strive for consistency and remember: the frame is for complementing our image, not the other way round!

3. Colors, materials

By following some of the basics, you can start the selection: if you have a light toned image, choose a darker frame because the contrasts create an exciting effect and highlight the tiny details. The same thing is true in reverse: in creations that are rich in deep blues, browns, blacks, the contrasting shades really revive the picture.

As for materials, we recommend plastic or metal frames for photographs, while for paintings and pastel pictures, wood or gold-plated pieces are the best match.

If you have the opportunity, and you trust the staff of the chosen workshop, feel free to ask for their opinions: they will make it easy for you, to make choices based on their experience. You can even take some photos of the interior where you want to put the artwork, that way you can imagine how the finished frame will look.
